the Collector:
Il faut que le masque ait dansé

Collector: Tony Jorissen
Curator: Sophie Berrebi
Artists: Sara van der Heide, Pauline M’Barek, Jean-Luc Moulène and Alain Resnais & Chris Marker

Collectors of African art use the phrase ‘the mask needs to have danced’ to express the principle that an object’s value rests on its having been used in a ritual context. This principle raises questions regarding the conditions of production, circulation and reception of African objects in the West.

Presenting a unique private collection of African art alongside art works by Sara van der Heide, Pauline M’Barek, Jean-Luc Moulène and Alain Resnais & Chris Marker, this exhibition examines practices of collecting and how they affect the interpretation of these objects.
